The Spanish control over the territory that they were able to maintain for a period of time by converting the local
tribes was reduced and weakened when French and English colonies were established both to the north and to
the west of the areas under the Spanish control.
History of Florida:
The state of Florida is located in the southeastern United States on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. To the north,
Florida is bordered by Georgia and Alabama, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida became a state in 1845. The territory of Florida was a primary site of the Seminole Wars against the
Indians, later followed by racial separation after the American Civil War.
According to Census Bureau statistics from 2010, Florida’s population is 18,801,310, making it the 4th most
populous state in the country. Florida’s territory is ranked as the 22nd in the United States.
The Spanish dominance in the region was furthermore weakened by the English, who provided their Creek and
Yamasee allies with firearms. The English also strongly recommended and pushed for their allies’ to raid the tribes
friendly to the Spanish (Timucuan and Apalachee tribes). The residents of St. Augustine were forced to hide in the
Castillo de San Marcos on multiple occasions, when the English attacked and burned the city and its cathedral to
the ground.
Florida’s largest city is Jacksonville, but its capital is Tallahassee.
For some time during the 1700's, Britain divided Florida territory into East and West Florida, each with its own
capital. After Britain was defended by the American colonies, Florida's territory went to Spain. Spanish increased
Florida's population by offering land grants to anyone who would accept them and move there. Many Americans
took advantage of this offer.
Florida received its name from Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish conquistador, who landed there at some point
during the Easter season in 1513 and called it La Florida, which means ‘Flowery Land’ and is close to Pascua
Florida, which translates roughly as ‘Flowery Easter.’ However, Ponce de Leon was likely not the first European to
visit Florida, because there were reports of some tribesman, who spoke Spanish and whom Ponce de Leon met in
Florida in 1513.
